Pairings for Red Wine

Exploring the World of Perfect Mulled Wine Matches:

From the bold flavours of Shiraz to the smooth notes of a Malbec, there are countless varieties of red wine to choose from. However, finding the perfect pairing for your mulled doesn't have to be a daunting task!

Let's explore the world of mulled wine pairings and offer tips and tricks for finding the perfect match. Whether you're a seasoned mulled wine aficionado or a curious beginner, this is for you.

So grab a glass of your favourite red and let's dive in!

One of the greatest things about mulling is that you don't need an expensive wine to make delicious mulled wine. Often a $10 bottle will do the trick!
As a broad 'rule-of-thumb', wines with fruit, spice, and sweet notes will do perfectly!
Try to avoid sharp or bitter wines with strong tannins.

The above principles lead us to well-known varieties like Shiraz, Merlot, and Malbec.
Shiraz is usually bolder in flavour than Merlot, so will often produce a bolder mulled wine. However, a light and sweet merlot can provide a delicate platform for the mulled spices to dance across your palette!
Also, let's not forget other varieties including Tempranillo and Sangiovese which are very easy to drink and pair very nicely for mulling.

Here are a few of our favourite picks:

Santa Julia - Malbec $8-12
This red is smooth and has a subtle sweetness to it. The tannins aren't too strong, allowing the spices to fuse in well.

Yellow Tail - Shiraz $8-$10
You can't go wrong with a shiraz. The great thing about mulled wine is that you don't need to spend a lot of money on a bottle of red wine, to be able to enjoy the flavours.

Calabria Family Wines -  Montepulciano $18-20
Attractive blackcurrant and dark cherry aromas combined with our mix of spices

Minchinbury Zero Alc - Shiraz $10-12
Don't or can't drink alcoholic wine? No worries! A zero alcohol shiraz will do the trick. You can enjoy the same mulled wine goodness as your friends.

The only thing remaining is for you to start testing these pairings out for yourself!

Enjoy!
